McDONOUGH SHINES IN FORMULA PACIFIC

The AFM series returned to Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA, for round 6 and along with it came rain storms and high winds. With rain clouds looming on the horizon, Race Control decided to fit in three of the Sunday races on Saturday to allow for more flexibility when the storms arrived.

Qualifying on Saturday for the Dunlop Race Tire Services Formula Pacific race was like a billboard for the new Kawasaki ZX-10R with all four riders, Wyatt Farris, Lenny Hale, Devon McDonough and Joey Pascarella all on team green’s latest liter bike offering. Two variables were former #1 plate holder Chris Siglin and former #4 plate holder Jason Lauritzen, who each had to scramble to repair downed bikes on Saturday.

Despite a rain delay in the morning, the Dunlop Race Tire Services Formula Pacific race started on time and was still slated for the full 12 laps. When the Green Flag dropped, the bikes screamed down the now dry pavement and Pascarella got the hole shot. He was followed closely by Hale, Farris, McDonough, Siglin, Cory Call, Jeremy Coffey and Lauritzen in that order. As Siglin passed McDonough in turn 10 for fourth place, the front nine bikes broke away, all chasing Pascarella up front.

On the next lap, Farris and Hale traded places a couple of times from turn 1 to turn 3, with Farris eventually winning out. Siglin continued his climb with another pass in turn 10, this time putting Hale behind him. As the laps continued, Hale’s bike didn’t seem to be running right as he slipped back and eventually pulled off the track. At the same time, Call kept charging until the group of five bikes up distanced themselves from the rest of the pack. By the conclusion of the sixth lap, the running order was Pascarella, Farris, Siglin, McDonough and Call with less than a second and a half between them all.

Almost as if on cue, after the riders passed the half way point, they started testing each other. First, Siglin made a move on Farris in turn 10 while Farris fought back on the very next corner. Immediately behind them, Call made a move on McDonough, only to have him repass him on the straight away. The next lap, Siglin tried Farris again on turn 10, this time making the pass stick and securing second place. The very next lap, Pascarella ran a little wide in turn 11 and Siglin sprung on the opportunity, taking over first place.

The action then intensified as Pascarella retook the lead on the next lap in turn 14, setting up a back and forth battle over the next few corners as Pascarella and Siglin traded the lead. As the battle for first place heated up, McDonough found his was around Farris in turn 1 and then Call put Farris back one more position in turn 2. But the final corner, McDonough had found his way into second place.

On the final lap, the top five riders were bunched up with a second between all of them. Call drove hard out of turn 5a and made an outside pass on Siglin in turn 6. Siglin fought back and looked to pass two riders in turn 10, but ran out of real estate and had to stand the bike up in the dirt on the short shoot between turns 10 and 11, watching himself fall behind Farris in 5th place.

The back straight saw bikes fan out for the final two corners and set up a classic drag race on the front straight, with McDonough edging at Pascarella at the line. Call wheelied in for third place, with Farris and Siglin close behind.

More, from a press release issued by Riders Discount:

WILLOWS, Calif.  — Joey Pascarella took second in round six of the American Federation of Motorcyclists (AFM) premier class on Sunday at Thunderhill Raceway. In the first lap Pascarella went from position four to one, which he maintained for the majority of the race. During the final lap Pascarella dropped from position one to two after being passed on the final turn. Pascarella is currently leading the Dunlop Race Tire Service Formula Pacific Championship.

“This weekend was a really important round for us,” said Pascarella. “Being the second to last race and a small points barrier to break down, I think we all knew what we had to do. I lead most of the race and controlled it from the front, but was passed on the final turn. In the end my guys did their job and put a great bike under me. I am very happy with the weekend and can’t thank everyone that supports me enough.”

The final round takes place on October 22-23 at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in Buttonwillow, California.
