Following the release of the 2 Series Coupe, rumour has it BMW will kick off production on a droptop version late this year.
Much like its fixed-roof variant, the 2 Series convertible replaces its 1 Series predecessor as BMW moves to rename its coupes with even numbers, while odd numbers will be reserved for its sedans and wagons. Along with the timing, BMW exec Herbert Diess told Ward’s Auto during the Detroit auto show that a cloth soft-top is “likely” for the 2 Series convertible, once again like its predecessor.
Although no further details have been confirmed, it’s safe to say the 2 Series convertible will be offered with the identical engine and transmission options as the coupe, given the relationship between the 4 Series coupe and convertible. That means the base engine will likely be BMW’s 2.0-litre, 241-horsepower turbo-four, while the 332-horsepower inline-six could serve as the range-topping mill until the rumoured M2 becomes a reality.
