Just Can’t Quit Racing Sweeps Endurance Podium at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit with the CMRA
The Just Can’t Quit Racing team of Pete Martins, Ron Mears, Craig Montgomery, and Jeff Wrobel took their first wins of the season with the both the US National Endurance Series and CMRA Championship Endurance overall wins and the win in Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike Endurance with their Dunlop-shod Suzuki GSX-R1000 this past Saturday, September 17.
The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held its fourth round of Championship Endurance, final round of the US National Endurance Series (USNE), eighth round of Lightweight Sprints, and second and third round of Solo 30 Sprints, bringing over 9 hours of racing action to Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, in Hallett, Oklahoma. Rain Friday afternoon made for a green track, but conditions steadily improved with breezy conditions and slightly humid temperatures in the low 80’s on the 1.8 mile counter clockwise course.
The Mini and Lightweight Sprint grids ran first, with the Island Racing Services – Solo 30 Heavyweight/Middleweight Expert and Novice make-up races from NOLA being the first race of the day. The grids were strong despite the earlier threat of rain, with over 20 combined entries each for the lightweight sprints. The Solo 30 Heavyweight/Middleweight Expert and Novice races, followed by the third Solo 30 Lightweight/Ultra-Lightweight Expert and Novice races that rounded out the morning also had large grids of 33 and 16 bikes respectively.
Brandon Cleland rode his RES-prepped, Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to both overalls and Solo 30 Heavyweight Expert wins, turning a blazing 1:15.971 fastest lap in the second Solo 30 Heavyweight race, which was the overall fastest lap of the day.
Young Cooper McDonald had a breakout weekend in the lightweights, getting on the podium four times with two different bikes by taking the wins in Formula 4 on his Yamaha TZ85, then grabbing his Yamaha YZF-R3 to win Ultra Lightweight GP Expert, second in Solo 30 Ultra Lightweight Expert, and third in 500 Superstock.
The track had improved quite a bit in time for the 6-Hour Championship Endurance/US National Endurance Series race with a combined grid of 21 teams taking the field, representing the Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike/Heavyweight, Promomin Oil/eni – C Superbike/Middleweight, Formula 2/Lightweight, and Modern Classic/Super Dinosaur Endurance classes.
The start lights went out, and the field was off to a strong start. The Village Idiots team of Cory Burleson, Chris Headley, John Orchard and Garet Tomlinson grabbed the early lead and held it for over an hour with a fastest first hour lap of 1:17.973 on their Yamaha YZF-R6. Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted team Just Can’t Quit Racing and Yamaha YZF-R1 mounted Davis Rod & Cycle/LSTD were hot on their heels. ONEprop North Texas Superbikes, riding a Kawasaki ZX-6R/636 tangled with In Torque We Trust aboard a Buell 1125R while being stalked by LocoMotion on a Yamaha YZF-R6 during the first hour. Headed into Hour 2, the Village Idiots low-sided and then madly scrambled to get the bike back on track as the Just Can’t Quit Racing took over the lead and turned the fastest lap of Hour 2 with a 1:19.009. The LocoMotion team of Brandon Altmeyer, Alonzo Contreras, Ryan Max Johnson, Darrell Ricks, and Mark Windham threw down, moving from sixth to third, bracketing Davis Rod & Cycle/LSTD while The Skidmarks riding a Yamaha YZF-R6 and Buffington Homes Racing also aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 moved in to fifth and sixth, edging out ONEprop North Texas and sandwiching the In Torque We Trust team of Jim Dugger, Andy Gilliland, Jorge Guerrero Jr, Carl Price, and Walt Sipp in fourth.
Heading into Hour 3, the weather stayed good, and lap times continued to improve. Just Can’t Quit racing held their lead with the fastest lap again of 1:18.982, but the Davis Rod & Cycle/LSTD team of Jesse Davis, Andy Galindo, Will Gruy, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede held second and didn’t let them get away. LocoMotion now had their hands full with The Skidmarks team of Chase Eason, Brady Ipock, Steven Nedd, Jay Newton, and Brian Prescott and Buffington Homes Racing, that had gotten around In Torque We Trust, relegating them to sixth.
During Hour 4, lap times continued to drop, but storm clouds were starting to gather. Just Can’t Quit Racing continued to hold a solid lead of one lap over the field with another fastest lap of 1:18.982, with Davis Rod & Cycle/LSTD not giving up second. LocoMotion still held off The Skidmarks, while In Torque We Trust wrestled with the two man iron butt team of Chris Fields and Kenny Smith for Buffington Homes Racing R6 for fifth. As the race stretched into Hour 5, Davis Rod & Cycle/LSTD pounced and took over the lead, but only got a 2.794 second lead over Just Can’t Quit Racing, as they once again turned a fastest lap of 1:18.982. The other positions held station as the sky started to darken and cloud up, and crews pulled up the radar to check the position of the storm.
During the final hour, it got interesting as the race leaders continued to charge. Just Can’t Quit Racing retook the lead, turning another fastest lap of 1:18.982, with Davis Rod & Cycle/LSTD holding off LocoMotion, who had a four lap lead over fourth, fifth, and sixth. As the storm front moved in, the winds picked up, lightning rattled in the distance, and it was a race against the clock and the weather to see if it could finish before the skies opened up. As the final laps wound down, a couple of drops started to fall, but held off as the endurance clock ticked down the final seconds.
Just Can’t Quit Racing took the checkers for the Overall USNE and CMRA win, and first in Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike/Heavyweight Endurance with a one lap lead over the field. Davis Rod & Cycle/LSTD crossed next, with second in both overalls, and second in A Superbike/Heavyweight Endurance, followed by Apex Predators, who finished third in both overalls and first in Promomin-eni OIis – C Superbike/Middleweight Endurance. In Torque We Trust was next, with fourth overall and first in Modern Classic/Super Dinosaur Endurance, followed by The Skidmarks, with fifth overall, and second in C Superbike/Middleweight Endurance. Buffington Homes Racing was right behind, with sixth overall and second in Modern Classic/Super Dinosaur Endurance. As everyone completed the cool down lap, rain started to fall.
