Takata Airbag Recall Now Affects 420,000 BMW Cars In The U.S.

Last week, Ford and Fiat Chrysler updated their Takata recalls list to include 6,000,000 vehicles. Now, BMW has expanded its recall list, bringing the total to 420,661 U.S. vehicles. Back in October 2014, NHTSA issued the largest airbag warning to include 7.8 million cars impacted by the Takata airbags recall. At the time, Takata informed the companies that faulty inflators may have slipped through the cracks and been delivered to manufacturers because of faulty record-keeping. BMW also said it will replace driver-side front air bags in about 140,000 BMW 3 Series vehicles in the U.S. from model years 2004 to 2006. BMW has said that none of its vehicles were involved in improper airbag deployments.

But now the recall expands further saying that new mail recall notices were sent to owners. When owners receive those notices, they’ll be able to take their vehicles to a BMW dealer, who will replace the front driver air bag module at no charge.

The following BMW models are now being recalled nationwide to replace driver-side airbags:

BMW says that only the X5 and 5 Series models with optional sports steering wheel are part of the recall.
