Under the hood, the new M models retain the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, with an increase of 12-horsepower and 53 lb.-ft. of torque over the previous generation. The transmission has been overhauled, however, with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic replacing the old X5/6 M's six-speed. All of this power is routed to all four wheels through BMW's ever-improving xDrive system, which is now capable of shifting 100-percent of the power to either set of wheels as needed.
