BMW is using its home-market Frankfurt auto show to display its latest contribution to the hybrid trend, the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept. The 2+2 concept also contributes to the obviously German trend of giving things names as long as a freight train, but it surely provides a vision—so to speak—of things to come from Bavaria.
BMW describes the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept as having “outstanding aerodynamic qualities”, a claim we won't question. BMW says that the slippery shape combines with BMW’s second-gen ActiveHybrid components and “an extremely economical combustion engine” to exceed the fuel efficiency of today’s small cars while delivering impressive performance.
Sub-Five-Second 0–60 Time and 62.6 mpg
The striking show car, which we’ll just call “Vision concept” from now on, is powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo-diesel mounted between the rear seat and the rear axle, plus two electric motors, one at each axle. While low on both cylinder count and displacement, the diesel engine produces a whopping 109 hp per liter for a total of 163 hp, as well as 214 lb-ft of torque. The rear electric motor with which the engine is paired consistently delivers 33 additional ponies, or bursts of 51 hp if necessary, with 214 lb-ft of torque available from zero rpm. Up front, a hybrid synchronous motor alone supplies the front wheels with a considerable 80 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, with 112 hp available for 30-second stints or 139 hp for 10-second “bursts” via a two-stage single-speed reduction gearbox. The Vision concept is able to run completely off the electric motors, on the turbo-diesel engine alone, or through a variable combination of all three. Total system output is up to 356 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque during brief bursts.
The Vision coupe is said to be able to hit 62 mph in 4.8 seconds on its way to a 155-mph governed top speed. Fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is claimed at 3.76 liters per 100 kilometers—62.6 mpg by our vernacular, if not our test procedures—and the CO2 emissions rating is 99 grams per kilometer. Of course, being a plug-in hybrid (with the plug under the car’s right-side “wing”), the emissions and fuel-economy figures can vary widely depending on how much of each power source is being tapped. Taking into account the emissions resulting from producing electricity, as the EU formula requires, BMW says the emissions rating is an extremely low 50 grams per kilometer in all-electric mode. And the company says the concept’s lithium-polymer batteries can charge in 2.5 hours from a typical European wall socket, and that a full charge can happen in just 44 minutes if a 380-volt outlet is available. Using a standard 110-volt U.S. socket, the charging times would be considerably longer, however.
Controversial Styling, Of Course
As for the Vision’s wild styling, suffice it to say that BMW’s design team must believe that hybrids have to look weird to be taken seriously. The crazed bodywork is certain to stir up plenty of controversy, especially with its menacing front end; leaf-shaped, transparent butterfly doors; and billowing, two-sided, white-and-blue body armor that suggests maybe it was a Transformer that didn’t quite transform all the way. Particularly cool are the scowling, squared-off headlamps; ribbon-like taillamps; and illuminated blue kidney grille. The interior is just as far out, with a cleft dashboard distilling all adjustable functions into just a few sculptured elements.
If nothing else, the Vision concept shows that BMW hasn’t forgotten how to make an eye-popping show car (remember the Concept CS), and it will be interesting to see which of this design study’s elements make their way to future BMWs. But whatever results from this concept, we hope it has a shorter name.
