A driver careened out of control on the Long Island Expressway on Sunday morning and crashed into oncoming traffic — killing himself, his sister, his 10-year-old son, an elderly man and a former Gov. Andrew Cuomo aide set to be married.

The horrific crash, which occurred around 9:30 a.m. near Exit 68 in Suffolk County, left mangled bodies, twisted metal and shattered debris strewn across the highway.

“This is the worst day of my life,” Stephen Martella, who lost his son, Scott, told The Post. “A car went over a guardrail and it landed on top of him, that’s all.”

Scott Martella, 29, was the communications director for Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone and a former Cuomo aide.

His fiancée and high school sweetheart, Shelbi Thurau, 29, who was in the car with him, was among six injured.

She wrote in a touching Facebook posting in September, “Sometimes 14 year old girls are silly. But sometimes they know just how their happily ever after is going to turn out.

“Scott Martella and I met in the Smithtown High school auditorium and tonight that’s where we got engaged! I’ve never loved anyone more and I am so lucky I get to spend the rest of my life smiling alongside him.”

Suffolk County police said the crash happened when a gray Subaru Outback traveling eastbound swerved across the grassy divider before going airborne and slamming into the westbound lane.

Carmelo Pinales, 26, of Hicksville was carrying four passengers when he smashed into a BMW holding four people and Martella’s Honda.

Pinales and his sister, Patricia, 27, of Westbury, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Pinales’ son, Christopher, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition; he later succumbed to his injuries.

Patricia’s 3-year-old daughter and Winnifer Garcia, 21, were also injured.

Marvin Tenzer, 73, the driver of the BMW, and passengers Sandra Tenzer, 69, and Helen and Isidore Adelson, both 81, all of Westhampton, were taken to local hospitals. Isidore later died.

Both lanes of the LIE between Exits 68 and 69 were closed down for about nine hours as police combed for evidence and workers removed the debris.

Cuomo said in a statement, “I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of those lost in the accident.

“I personally knew Scott Martella who was among those killed in the crash as he served in my administration for more than four years.

“Scott was a dedicated, beloved public servant who worked day in and day out to improve the lives of his fellow New Yorkers. … Long Island is a better place today because of his service and dedication to the community.”
